In the wake of unprecedented jump in Tomato prices the Govt. has stepped in to take positive steps to ensure prices come down. The Govt has decided to reach out to states producing bulk tomatoes from Andhrapradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Government has directed through Department of Consumer Affairs the Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF) to procure Tomato from the states and then distribute it in major consumption centres to bring the prices in check.
Western India and southern States especially Andhra in Karnataka contribute majority to more than 50 percent of Country production of Tomato. Disruption in supply chain unprecedent rain in March, April has led to a shortfall in supply with demand outpacing it. Govt. steps in this direction will help curve the prices shortly.
